A House Cleansing and Blessing

About Smudge Sticks

Using a smudging tool is part of many Native American traditions. The burning of herbs for emotional, psychic, and spiritual purification is also common practice among many religious, healing, and spiritual groups. The ritual of smudging can be defined as "spiritual house cleaning." In theory, the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as the smoke clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space where it will be regenerated into positive energy.

How To Smudge Yourself

Put the smudge stick to flame using a match or candle light.

Blow on or wave the flame with your hand to put out the fire.

Allow the smudge stick to smolder, freeing the smoke to circle in the air. Fan the swirls of smoke around your body's aura from head to toe.

How To Smudge Your Home

You should take a bath first using some oils to relax and cleanse youself, light candles in the bathroom, filling the room with light.

Close all of the windows in the house.

Light the smudge stick and drive/fan the smoke in to the 4 corners of each room, visualising old and negative energies leaving your home, breathe deeply, and with each outward breath let go of the old energies, and breathe in the new.

As you do this you could recite the blessing below, or you can of course use words of your own choosing.

After the smudging has taken place, light a white candle and again, go in to the 4 corners of each room, letting the light touch each corner.

Leave the smudging stick and the white candle to burn themselves out, so make sure you have suitable fire proof bowls/candle holders.

When this is done, gather up a small snack, and go to the park or the beach, and eat your snack, take in nature, see the beauty in it, eating serves to ground your energies after the cleansing.

When you return home, open your windows welcoming light and new energies in.

A nice idea is to have some crystals placed around your home.

Amethyst is a good one to have (Don't keep it in the sunlight though or it fades) because it relieves physical, emotional and psychological pain or stress.

It eases tension and headaches, and can treat insomnia and aid restful sleep.

It cleanses the aura, and balances and connects the physical, emotional and mental bodies and links to the spiritual.

It opens intuition and enhances psychic gifts and encourages spiritual wisdom.

It also blocks negative energies and guards against psychic attacks, transferring the energy in to love, and because of this it is one of the most powerful, protective and spiritual stones.

Touch the lintel and touch the wall,

Nothing but blessings here befall!

Bless the candle that stands by itself,

Bless the book on the mantle shelf,

Bless the pillow for the tired head,

Bless the hearth and the light shed.

Friends who tarry here, let them know

A three fold blessing before they go.

Sleep for weariness - peace for sorrow

Faith in yesterday and tomorrow.

Friends who go from here, let them bear

The blessing of hope, wherever they fare.

Lintel and windows, sill and wall,

Nothing but good, this place befall.
